When shidachi takes waki gamae
stance, the ha should angled up to face the opponent, as if preparing an upward slice in uchidachi's direction. Wrists should be relaxed and curved slightly outward,
again to maximize efficiency in motion.
While shidachi
waits for uchidachi’s move, knees
should be slightly bent, and weight slightly forward with pressure pushed toward
the opponent.
Three cautious steps sideways are taken, with the feet
crossing over each other. When shidachi
and uchidachi face off, the bukuto should be raised sharply and
quickly, close to the body, and no pause should be given before the initial clash
of bokuto. Shidachi does this by
taking a half step forward with the right foot. This clash should take place
just before the bokuto reach head
height respectively. The visualization is that both shidachi and uchidachi wish to strike the opponent's head. If the bokuto stop too high in the air it seems that neither were trying to hit at all.
As with sanbon
me pressure should be exerted through the bokuto as they are lowered. If the two players find that they are too close together at this point, uchidachi may take a half step back before initiating the subsequent thrust.
When
the bokuto are roughly chest height, uchidachi will thrust forward toward shidachi’s chest. Shidachi reflects this by side-stepping diagonally (forward left) with
their left foot. At the same time, shidachi's bokuto slides under uchidachi's and with the ha deflects it from over shidachi's right shoulder with the tip pointed down
Without
pause, shidachi then brings the bokuto back up above the center of their
head and performs the final strike to uchidachi’s
head, with a step forward with the right foot. Uchidachi will then yield and
take a step back. Shidachi follows by
taking a step back to the right and meeting in the center again.
