Gohon-me

Specifically for the the suriage counter strike, shidachi twists the bokuto so that the ha is nearly at a 90 degree angle when meeting uchidachi’s strike. There is little to no diagonal motion in this counter strike. The curve of the ha will naturally deflect uchidachi’s strike. Shidachi simply completes the same upward motion, twists the bokuto back to its normal position and performs the return strike to uchidachi’s head.

Shidachi must then maintain a firm pressure and feeling of cautious awareness when completing the final motions. The visualization is that uchidachi is in a position to easily cut upward at shidachi's unprotected stomach if shidachi is too lax in his pressure.

Exert a cautious pressure over uchidachi's eyes with the tip of the bokuto while preparing to step back into hidari-jodan. The step into hidari-jodan should be large and swift, yet graceful. Remember, shidachi is vulnerable to attack as he steps back. Make sure uchidachi knows he has been defeated! When uchidachi concedes and returns to chudan-no-kamae, shidachi can slowly ease his pressure and take the final two steps forward to center again.
